Problems with double-decker trains
My own recollection of the units used on the various lines between
Dartford and London is that they were somewhat claustrophobic, and the
upper decks were uncomfortably stuffy, as the windows on that level were
not made to open...These were possibly the reasons why people often preferred
to stand on the lower deck rather than sit on the upper, thus causing
more congestion and delay at stations than might otherwise have been the
case. It was an ingenious attempt to solve a long standing problem which
unfortunately didn't quite come off, due to minor, not major faults of
design.
